Can you remember the first time you held a golf club in your hand? It was probably strange and completely unnatural. But, you tried. And tried again. Hell, you’re probably still trying. But the first time you hit the sweet spot, you knew you were hooked for life. It was love.
Now, remember who was standing next to you. If you were younger it was probably a parent or a grandparent. Perhaps it was a close friend. For others it might have been your spouse, or a co-worker, but it was someone that you knew who originally introduced you to the game of golf. They hoped that you would love the game as much as they did. It turned out they were right.
Today, the United States Golf Association, the PGA of America, and other industry leaders are trying to spread the word about the game. They’re hoping that celebrity testimonials will encourage you to give golf a try, and that it just might stick.
It seems like a number of people are trying to play the game, but a new golfer quickly realizes how difficult and expensive golf can be. Often they walk away from the game. National campaigns tend to lure people to the game, but they don’t stick around for very long.
New golfers need a network to support them from introduction to addiction. They need other golf lovers to encourage them toward progress. They need people like us to help them find good bargains for golf equipment, and places to play that won’t break the bank. These kinds of networks can only exist at a local level.
That’s where TANG Golfing can help. TANG Golfing is short for Take A Non-Golfer Golfing. The concept may remind you of the space drink, but it is more than that. It is the idea that people like you and me can grow the game of golf by simply providing a support network new golfers need in order to join the game and stick with it.
We are excited to launch TANG Golfing nationwide. It starts at our Website, tanggolfing.com. We want you to share your story with us.
How did you learn to play? Who was there to give you the pat on the back you needed to keep going? Did someone else help bring you into the game? What worked for you? What didn’t?
Sharing these stories will help people who are just beginning to play the game and those of us trying to invite others to join us.
TANG Golfing will also be a resource to help jump start local programs for new golfers, younger and older. We’ll help you contact your local courses and driving ranges. We can help you organize equipment donation drives that will help provide starter equipment to new players who don’t want to make the initial investment.
We are also going to ask for your help in organizing a national TANG Golfing Day. We want to use the power of golfers around the country to work with local courses to celebrate the progress we are making. TANG Golfing wants to reward the work that we will be doing together to grow the game with two-for-one specials, or other discounts on green fees. Using our collective voices and time, we can grow the game and make golf a little better for having done so.
We invite you to join us. Come to tanggolfing.com and share your story. Add our badge to your blog. Post a sign at your pro shop, driving range, or clubhouse. Sign up for our e-mail alerts. Let’s get started! Let’s get golfing!

Interesting concept…I will pass it along! Let me know what else I can do to help!
